Coexistence of neurosarcoidosis and multiple sclerosis

چکیده
Sarcoidosis is a multisystem infl ammatory disease of unknown etiology that predominantly aff ects the lungs and intrathoracic lymph nodes, but in 6% of cases it also occurs in central or peripheral nervous system. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated infl ammatory disease that attacks myelinated axons in the central nervous system. Coexistence of sarcoidosis and other autoimmune diseases like MS is rarely reported in the literature. We present a case report of a patient with coexisting sarcoidosis and MS, with a positive family history of MS. Symptoms of sarcoidosis appeared three years before the onset of symptoms typical for MS. Similarity of demyelinating lesions in the nervous system, increased IgG in cerebrospinal fl uid and good response to corticosteroid treatment point to similar etiology. Th e onset of diseases like sarcoidosis and MS in the same patient over a period of only a few years opens the question whether the two separate entities come in sequence or the onset of sarcoidosis occurs during development of typical clinical presentation of MS.

Role of Pulmonary Evaluation in Diagnosis of Neurosarcoidosis.
BACKGROUND Neurosarcoidosis is a serious extra pulmonary manifestation of sarcoidosis. Its presentation ranges from peripheral or cranial neuropathy to central nervous system dysfunction. It can mimic stroke or multiple sclerosis. Due to the variation in clinical presentation, diagnosis is difficult and often delayed. OBJECTIVE Determine the proportion of patients with neurosarcoidosis who ha...

which typically develops between the ages of 20 and 40 years1. Neurosarcoidosis occurs in only 5-15% of adults with sarcoidosis, and is seldom reported in children2-5. Of the cases described in the literature, children were found more likely to present with seizures, and less commonly space-occupying lesions6. The tumefactive brain lesions are difficult to distinguish from the tumefactive demye...
متن کاملHigh-signal periventricular lesions in patients with sarcoidosis: neurosarcoidosis or multiple sclerosis?
The vast majority of periventricular abnormalities visualized with MR imaging in patients less than 50 years old represents multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions. There are many other causes of periventricular lesions, most of which can be differentiated from MS on the basis of history and physical or MR findings. Five cases of biopsy- or Kveim test-proved sarcoidosis with MR findings consistent with...

OBJECTIVE To report on the clinical presentations, laboratory abnormalities, treatment and outcomes in 54 patients with neurosarcoidosis (NS). BACKGROUND Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory granulomatous disease affecting multiple organ systems. Neurosarcoidosis (CNS involvement) is seen in approximately 25% of patients with systemic sarcoidosis, although it is subclinical in most of these cases. ...
